I have photographed Ijon on multiple occasions, but this session easily ranks among my favorites. It was a chance to show him in a different light while still blending in elements from our earlier shoots.
Musicians have always fascinated me. They are often full of stories, and from the very beginning, Ijon has had plenty to share. I usually spend more time listening to him than actually taking pictures, and I would not have it any other way.
For this session, I drew inspiration from one of my favorite books, Blue Note: Photographs by Francis Wolff, with text by Michael Cuscuna. It captures the performances and offstage lives of more than 100 legendary jazz musicians from Blue Note Records, and it is a constant source of creative fuel for me.
Photographing Ijon has given me some of my favorite images to date. I have always believed you should take the time to truly know someone before you capture them, and when you do, aim to photograph them in the most honest way possible.
